I can not emphasize enough the importance of strength training if you are experiencing chronic low back pain. Most people with low back pain shy away from strength training or the gym because they feel it will hurt them more. This is one of the biggest myths out there in the fitness industry in my opinion. One thing people do not realize is strength training is a broad term and there are so many different types of strength training that can help when it comes to back pain. With this said, performing the correct exercises and being taught proper technique is crucial.
Over the last 10 years I have worked with a lot of people with chronic low back pain and everyone of them has very little pain now after being consistent with a strength program. Strength training is not a quick fix to low back pain you have to work hard and stay consistent with your program, but it will pay off.
Most people have low back pain due to weaknesses in hips and inner core. Our bodies are not made to sit all day, it is so important to move! Just participating in our sports is not enough either if you are not engaging the proper muscles. We have so many muscles in our bodies that help stabilize and support our spine. Unless you strengthen these through proper movement these muscles are not fired properly and the bigger muscle groups take over.
I had chronic back pain for a few years until I became consistent with strength training. The strength I was able to develop taught me how to engage my core properly while skiing or biking. When I went running I realized and learned how to activate my hamstrings and glutes. Having all your muscles work together is the best way to prevent injury and avoid the chronic pain.
