In March of last year I sustained a season ending injury while competing in Haines, Alaska. I had torn my ACL, MCL, medial and lateral meniscus, along with fracturing my tibia plateau. I was very stressed and unsure of a plan to move forward. Luckily, I had a great support system to get me back on track. Crystal helped keep me mentally strong from the moment the injury happend.
One of the first messages I received upon leaving the medical center was from Crystal. She told me, “don’t worry we will get you back stronger than ever.” From that moment on I was back in the gym training, working on my core, shoulders, back, and upper body. I had a plan of attack and a strategy to recover as quick and strong as possible. Even though my legs weren’t ready, I had to keep my mental strength and drive alive. I spent the last seven months training my body’s foundation and rebuilding my left leg. Mentally, I was ready to progress my strength, Unfortunately not everything goes as planned.
7 months post surgery I found myself full swing in rehab and training, yet still dealing with complications. I had not only hit a physical block but mentally I was beginning to do the same. Luckily, with the daily work with Joe at Excel Physical Therapy in the gym and with Crystal and her crew at Wright Training, we could all collectively work together for the most effective strategy. Crystal, Joe, and myself all had come to the conclusion that it was time to go in for round two. My meniscus was not healing and hindering my recovery. Again, I had to set a new plan of attack. It was time to operate on my meniscus to allow me to progress in my range of motion, strength, flexibility, and speed my recovery with the ultimate goal of competing again this season.
Now, eight months out of my initial surgery and one month out of my second operation, I’m feeling stronger than ever and finally back on skis. Everyday I’m feeling stronger mentally and physically. I find myself skiing faster and stronger day by day. If it weren’t for the support of everyone at Wright Training I would be no where near the slopes, let alone given the chance to compete this season. This experience has allowed me to grasp how important one’s overall physical strength helps to build mental strength and a positive outlook. I want to thank everyone at Wright Training, including Crystal, Brian, Pete, Joe and everyone else in the gym everyday for the positive and supportive working environment and for always providing words of encouragement.
