Q: You turned 60 years old last year and have been training with Wright Training for over 10 years! Yet, you are crushing barbell cleans and have a better squat than most 20 year olds. Tell us about your years training.
A: I recognized the importance of physical fitness early on. As a high school athlete but not good enough for college level sports, I found recreational league sports were fun but it took me going full “Jane Fonda” to appreciate the many benefits of physical fitness. Yes, frizzy big hair, leotards, leg warmers and the wonder of step aerobics!
Fast forward a few decades (!) and physical activity has become an even more essential tool for stress reduction, weight management, injury prevention and optimizing performance in my favorite sports. If I don’t get regular exercise, my husband lovingly describes me as Linda Blair from the Exorcist movie when her head turns 360 degrees on her body!!
The discovery of Wright Training came at a critical time for me. As a veterinarian and small business owner with young kids, I was living a very full, very hectic and stressful life. I found the relatively short, high intensity workouts improved my strength, aerobic capacity and endurance. Crystal’s workouts have helped me keep my head and body going on the “Wright” direction!
Q: What sports do you enjoy in the mountains?
A: Like most everyone here in JH, skiing, both resort and back country, hiking, mountain and road biking.
Q: Have you experienced any injuries in all the years you’ve been playing in Jackson? How did you recover from them?
A: I was hit by a car on my road bike a few years ago…..thanks in large part to Wright training I bounced really hard and bruised magnificently, but did not break! The strength and resilience of my body (and apparently good bone density) from weight training saved me!! Otherwise I have been blessed with good joints and feel very lucky for that! I experience minor tweaks and pains that all active people do. As an aging recreational athlete, I am learning to respect my body and the changes I can’t ignore. I vow to keep moving and enjoy my sports but moderation is becoming more and more important to prevent injury.
Q: You can only do 3 exercises for the rest of your life – what are they?
A: Squats, push-ups, planks, yoga/pilates. Oops, that’s more than 3.
Just please don’t make me run! Haha Crystal!!
Q: What else should we know about MJ?
A: I have two awesome twenty-something sons, Josh and Matt, who are off and living their own amazing lives. I’m best friends with Dan, my sweet husband and business partner of 30 years. We are staring at the reality of retiring soon. Time to explore other interests and passions, travel to new places and relax a little. We will always stay fit and active, in body and soul😉
I want to give Crystal a special thank you for being a big inspiration in my life. Most importantly, thanks for all you do, especially for women, old like me and the young women following in your footsteps. You are a true blessing to the communities of JH and Teton valley.💕
